‘Dr. George Washington Carver, scientist, botanist, educator, and inventor is believed to have been born on this date January 10, 1864. Dr. Carver discovered over 300 products from peanuts, soybeans and sweet potatoes, which aided nutrition for farm families. He wanted poor farmers to grow alternative crops both as a source of their own food and as a source of other products to improve their quality of life.’

Sultry heat encompasses the earth.
The anticipation of relief;
Winds diminish
Leaves droop,
Colors darkens.
Damp air thickens with the approaching rain.
The smell of humanity
Filters through the air
Screaming for relief
The world waits.

A solitary figure appears
Gently, she touches his face
Following every line
She begins to cry
Remembering the joyful times
Suddenly a shadow appears
And it all fades away.
